Tamilians are very much known for their culture and rituals, especially on wedding occasion. It is the most significant moment in their life.
Yep. They pay more attention to conducting each and every ritual in its unique method. Though the wedding is simple, they follow all customs traditionally.
What are the important Customs?
The wedding ceremony starts with the temporary planting of a bamboo tree called pandhakaal muhurtham that is to be held where both of the bride and groom’s family wish to seek God’s blessings to avoid unexpected interruption till the end of marriage.
Nowadays, Nichayadhartham happens at an excellent Marriage hall (Kalyana Mandapam) to get rid of unwanted troubles. People prefer halls instead of their place. Relatives are most important for this function to bless the bride and groom by placing sandal (sandhana) and kumkum on their forehead. Moreover, Lagnapathirikai is also read by the relative as a pre-announcement of the wedding, and they exchange their fruits and salt in front of Lord Ganesh to get the blessings and get closer to each other.
On the wedding day, ceremonial bath with turmeric water should be taken by both bride and groom at the early morning to signify that they are ready to get married.
Here, the final and most auspicious moment is marriage which also mostly takes place at a sacred place, i.e., marriage hall in front of all kith and kin. The groom wears gorgeous silk saree, and the bride wears dhoti and shirt. A Brahmin is invited to preach the bride and groom via Veda mantras. The bride and groom should wash their parent’s feet to get blessings from them.
Then the “Mangalyam” is blessed by all people and tie that around the bride’s neck by that groom where all people bless them by showering grains over their head.
Finally, the bride and groom take the vow by a walk around the holy burning fire by hold their hand together, and they get blessings from their parents.
This occasion ends with happiness and a great lunch.
